6 things you should know when buying an engagement ring

For many men, choosing an engagement ring is their first exposure to diamonds. From brand, quality, style to finger size, etc., there are so many options to consider that it’s dizzying.

How should you start to choose a suitable engagement ring? Diamania is an officially recognized diamond retailer by GIA, and its employees have GIA diamond certification qualifications. Let us break down the considerations and precautions for you!

1) Decide your own budget first, it is not unnecessary to compare excessively

No matter how much it costs, it still represents a man's precious thoughts. You only need to choose the best one according to your ability to afford it. Getting married already involves a lot of costs, but the most important thing is to let the other person feel your determination and sincerity.

The first step is to set a budget for the engagement ring before you can start comparing and choosing in different directions.

If you have no idea about your budget, based on past experience, customers will buy a diamond engagement ring at an average price of 1-2 months' salary, and the most common ones purchased are diamonds with 0.7 to 1.2 carats. You can use this as a reference.

2) Be sure to choose diamonds with a GIA certificate

GIA is recognized as the most authoritative diamond grading organization in the world, ensuring that the diamonds you buy will be worth your money.

The quality of diamonds using other certificates (or even no certificates) may often be overestimated and not credible enough, so customers are not recommended to purchase them. For example, if a merchant sells diamonds with E VS1 grade from other certificates, they may only reach G Si1 grade according to GIA grading standards.

Even for diamond buyers, it is difficult to accurately analyze many aspects of standards (such as symmetry) without a certificate. You will only buy an engagement ring once, and a reputable certificate is the best guarantee.

3) Diamonds of the same grade can have very different prices.

Diamonds are the soul of engagement rings and the factor that most affects the price.

Of course, the quality of diamonds affects the price, but it turns out that there is a gap in pricing between GIA diamonds of the same grade in different stores. In fact, the difference is so large that it is unimaginable.

It can be roughly divided into 4 levels (there are also some differences in each category)

GIA diamonds of the same size and grade are priced at HK$10,000 in the local diamond shop upstairs.

Local Diamond Upstairs Shop – HK$10,000

Foreign online diamond dealer – HK$11,000-12,000

Traditional floor shops and local chain store brands – HK$15,000-25,000

International first-tier brand – HK$30,000+

Comes with a GIA certificate. Diamonds are the same when purchased in any type of store. The quality of the diamond depends on the 4C level on the certificate itself rather than on the brand. If you want to feel more at ease, you can ask the store to send the finished engagement ring to the GIA official laboratory in Central for review service, which usually only costs a few hundred yuan.

Reputable diamond shops will provide diamond search engines with transparent prices and diamond information.

Therefore, as long as you spend some time collecting information before choosing an engagement ring, you can easily save more than 50% to buy a GIA diamond of the same grade.

4) Quality recommendations for first time diamond purchase

You should first have a preliminary understanding of the most basic diamond 4Cs , fluorescence reaction, etc.

It is best to choose 3EX (cut, polish, symmetry) diamonds, because the cutting process directly affects the sparkle and diamond size, among which Cut (cut) is the most important. Even to save budget, it is recommended to keep the cut grade as EX.

Secondly, do not choose diamonds with too low a clarity grade. Such diamonds are prone to encounter impurities that affect the sparkle or structure of the diamond. For example, severe Cloud and Twinning wisp can lead to Milky situation; severe edge cracks (Feather) will be more likely to break under pressure. In most cases, we recommend that the bottom line for clarity is Si2.

Finally, avoid diamonds with strong fluorescence reactions. Diamonds with strong fluorescence will have a certain chance of making the diamond turbid. No fluorescent is the best choice. However, since there is a significant price difference, fluorescent grades Faint and Med can also be considered when price is considered.

5) Pay careful attention to finger size

The most embarrassing situation may be when your partner says yes but the ring size is too tight to fit...

Very important! Remember to estimate your finger size in advance. The engagement ring is worn on the middle finger of your left hand.

It is often recommended to use string or paper strips to measure the circumference of your partner's fingers, but the accuracy is very low. In many cases, the deviation of this method is often more than 3 sizes, so we do not recommend it.

If your partner already wears a ring, you may want to try it on your own finger for comparison, or take the ring to a store to measure the size directly, but note that there will be some differences between different fingers and the left and right hands.

Some stores also offer individual rubber rings of different sizes for loan, completely free of charge. Get your finger size measured without your partner knowing!

If you are afraid of being discovered, it is recommended to use your own and your partner's fingers to roughly compare and estimate, and use the circle number and diameter comparison table to get a closer size with the least holes (remember to note that the bone part is usually a little larger, and generally women's Middle finger size is 12 to 14 circles). Order a size slightly larger than the estimated size to ensure that the engagement ring can be worn smoothly.

Most stores provide a free ring size change service, and you can change the size at any time after a successful proposal.

6) Understand her preferred style and choose the style

There are ever-changing styles of rings, and many times a style that feels delicate will feel completely different when worn.

Don’t forget that the engagement ring is meant to be worn for a lifetime . Will the ring style you like match her?

You might as well start to know more about her preferences and style as early as possible. In fact, women are very smart and sensitive. She may just pass by the window and open the Facebook ad, and she will reveal her preferences to you intentionally or unintentionally; she can also ask her good sisters to provide The opinions and efforts put into the selection process all represent love and sincerity .

If you really have no clue, you can consider choosing a simple and classic ring style . It is evergreen and easy to match, and is generally very popular with girls.
